What these figures actually say about cleaning companies
This is not one industry. It is a small number of very large contract cleaners sitting on top of an enormous field of solo operators.
Over a million nonemployer cleaning businesses nationally, against fewer than seventy thousand companies with staff. Yet the employer half employs over a million people, which means the average employer establishment here carries around sixteen staff, the largest average crew of any industry in this dataset by a wide margin. Both facts are true at once and neither describes the other half.
The two halves sell to different buyers. Sixteen staff to an establishment is a commercial contract cleaning business servicing offices and sites on a schedule. A nonemployer cleaning business is almost always a residential cleaner with a book of houses. Quoting the combined number as the size of the cleaning industry, which is common, flattens the most important structural fact about it.
The code also decides some boundaries that surprise people. Window cleaning services are inside it. Exterior building cleaning and pressure washing are not, and carpet cleaning is a separate code again, both of which have their own pages on this site.
A solo residential cleaner and a commercial contractor are competing in different markets with the same photographs available to both. The residential one wins on trust in a suburb; the commercial one wins on evidence a facilities manager can forward, which is a dated pair from a real site.
