What these figures actually say about landscaping supervisors and crew leaders
A foreman on a landscaping payroll is in this number. An owner operator with two vans is not, and that distinction is most of the trade.
The median here sits well above the groundskeeping code, and the spread is wider, both of which are ordinary for a supervisory grade. What is not ordinary is how few people the code covers relative to the workers they supervise. Landscaping crews are small, so the supervisory layer is thin, and the survey counts the layer rather than the trade.
The Census landscaping services page shows an employer side that is genuinely large by the standards of this dataset, with well over a hundred thousand companies carrying staff. This wage record describes the people running crews inside those companies. It does not describe the several hundred thousand nonemployer landscaping businesses that have no crew to run.
The highest paying states are a mixture of high cost metropolitan markets and states with short, intense seasons. A high mean in a short season market is not the same offer as the same mean in a year round one, and the published data cannot separate the two.
A crew leader who leaves to run their own round is the most common career move in this trade and the moment the marketing problem starts. A round is geographic, so the local tag and the recognisable street position in the photograph are doing more work than any national audience ever will.
