Hashtags and captions for tattoo artists

The one trade where using fewer hashtags is a reputation decision rather than an algorithm one. Cover up tags, style tags, and the placement content that quietly costs you distribution.

41 tags · 30 captions · 3 platform pages · researched 1 August 2026

Tattooing recommends the lowest hashtag count of any trade on this site, and it did so long before Instagram capped anything. Two independent sources put it at three to five and both warn that heavy hashtagging reads as unprofessional in this trade specifically. Style tags are how clients actually shop for an artist, so they are the highest intent tags you have.

Start hereone set per platform

Three platforms, three different sets

These are not the same five tags reshuffled. Instagram leans on community and trade identity, TikTok on content type and outcome, Facebook on plain local language. Copy the one you are posting to, then swap the last tag for your own city.

Instagram

Five, and it is a hard cap

  • #coveruptattoo
  • #blackandgreytattoo
  • #tattoosofinstagram
  • #finelinetattoo

#tattooartist #coveruptattoo #blackandgreytattoo #tattoosofinstagram #finelinetattoo

5 tags

Community and identity tags. Half the value of an Instagram tag is that a trade magazine, a supplier or a repost account watches it.

TikTok

Three to five, by convention not by rule
  • #tattootok
  • #tattoocoverup
  • #tattootransformation
  • #tattooartist
  • #blackwork

#tattootok #tattoocoverup #tattootransformation #tattooartist #blackwork

5 tags

Content-type and outcome tags. Every trade has a tok suffix community tag, and the satisfying and ASMR lane is a real distribution channel rather than a joke.

3 tags

Local and plain-language tags. Nobody on Facebook follows a hashtag, but a suburb tag can surface in search and reads as local rather than as spam.

Every tag this trade actually uses

Grouped by tier rather than ranked, because rank depends on which platform you are posting to and that lives on the platform pages. Tags marked below are Instagram or TikTok native; the rest work on both.

Broad

8

Millions of posts. These reach far and convert badly. One is useful for categorisation, two is a waste of a slot you cannot spare.

What works for tattoo artists

Three to five, and this is a credibility rule not a reach rule

Mix one or two popular tags with a style specific tag and one location tag. Over tagging in this trade actively damages how serious your account looks to the exact clients you want.

Location tags in three shapes

Clients search geographically before they search stylistically. Cover all three patterns across your posts: city then tattooartist, tattooartist then city, and country then tattooartist.

A cover up is a story, not a pair

Carousels run to twenty slides and cover up progression is exactly what they are for. Old piece, stencil, linework, shading, healed. The pair is the thumbnail, the carousel is the proof.

Healed work is the trust asset

Healed shots and healing progress drive more enquiries than fresh ink glamour shots, because they answer the client fear that the piece will not look like that in a year. Build a permanent healed work highlight beside the cover ups.

Scar cover up work needs plain language, not tags

Self harm scar cover up is meaningful work and the adjacent tags are banned on Instagram and hard banned on TikTok. Describe the work in the caption and tag none of it.

Seasonality

Long sittings get booked in the cooler months when sleeves stay down, and small pieces spike around holidays and festivals.

The shot

Take the before by a window, pre stencil, with the limb resting exactly where it will sit for the session, then take the after from the same window at the same distance. Skin reads very differently under a studio lamp, so if the before is under natural light the after has to be too. Fresh ink is always shinier than healed ink, so say which one you are showing.

Do not use these7 flagged tags

Tags to keep off a tattoo artist post

Instagram publishes no official banned list and gives no warning when a tag is restricted. Every tag below was flagged by at least one source during research on 1 August 2026, and these lists rotate. Check any tag you use habitually by searching it inside the app: if the tag page says recent posts are hidden, or returns almost nothing, drop it.

  • #armpartyFlagged, and precisely the tag a sleeve or arm stack post reaches for.
  • #masterMaster tattooer is a common self description and the tag is flagged.
  • #nudityFlagged. Rib, chest, sternum and hip placement content sits close to the classifiers that police it, and boobs and ass are flagged too.
  • #edgyFlagged, and an obvious reach for dark or provocative flash.
  • #goddessFlagged, and common on portrait and deity pieces.
  • #eggplantFlagged. Relevant to food and produce style flash designs.
  • #killingitFlagged, and a natural caption on a piece you are proud of.

Where these tags came from

Researched on 1 August 2026 across trade press, supplier blogs, platform discover pages and live captions. Every tag was seen in real use. Tiers are an editorial judgement from cross source frequency, not a post count.

Common questions

What hashtags should tattoo artists use?
41 tags are listed on this page, tiered from broad to niche, and each of the three platform pages ranks a thirty tag rotation pool out of them for that platform. Start with the platform starter set, and spend one slot permanently on your own city.
Why are the Instagram and TikTok lists different?
Because the platforms reward different things. Instagram tags are community and identity tags, and half their value is that a trade magazine or supplier account watches them. TikTok tags are content type and outcome tags, and every trade has a tok suffix community tag. Running one list on both is the most common mistake in the trades.
How many hashtags can I use now?
Instagram capped captions on posts and Reels at five hashtags, announced in December 2025 and rolled out through 2026, and it counts the caption and the comments together. TikTok publishes no cap and three to five is the convention. On Facebook hashtags do very little and two or three is plenty.
Can I compare two video clips in the app?
No. Before and After Video Maker takes two still photographs in and puts a video, a GIF or an image out. It has no timeline and no trimming, and nothing on this site suggests otherwise.

The tags are the easy half

The post still needs a pair of photographs that match. Shoot them, then turn them into a 1080p video, a looping GIF or a still in Before and After Video Maker. Eight templates and all four comparison modes are free.
