Two photos, one reveal

A look, rather than a layout

Platform templates

The specials: neon and cyberpunk edges, gold-on-dark luxury, and the wide 16:9 layouts for YouTube and a website.

10 templates · 3 packs · all Pro · canvas 9:16, 4:5, 16:9

Platform frames at their real proportions, in their own ground colours, each with its own rule. Drawn from the catalogue, so it redraws when the app does.

Anybody who has decided what the post should feel like before deciding what goes in it. Neon and cyberpunk edges for a gaming or tech audience, gold on dark for luxury, and the wide layouts for a site or a video thumbnail. These are chosen for style, and the ones at the wide end are chosen for a surface that is not a phone.

A stylised frame sets an expectation the pair has to meet. Neon on near-black flatters a subject with hard edges and hard light, and drowns a soft one. Gold on dark asks the photograph to be composed rather than snapped. The wide layouts show the sides of a subject that vertical crops away, which is what makes them the right shape for a driveway, a garden, a room or a workbench, and the wrong shape for a person.

  1. Cyber Pink

    9:16 vertical · Bebas Neue · 5 pt rulePro

Vertical, near-black, the thickest magenta rule on the site. The loudest frame here.

  2. Cyber Blue

    9:16 vertical · Bebas Neue · 5 pt rulePro

The same construction in blue, which sits better behind screens, metal and night shots.

  3. Emerald

4:5 portrait · Playfair Display Bold · 3 pt rulePro

Deep green with a gold rule and serif labels, portrait. Considered rather than urgent.

  4. Burgundy

4:5 portrait · Playfair Display Bold · 2 pt rulePro

The warmest of the luxury three, for interiors, timber and skin tones.

  5. Wide Minimal

    16:9 wide · Inter Bold · 1 pt rulePro

Wide and white, hairline grey rule. Made for a website header or a case study.

  6. Wide Bold

    16:9 wide · Bebas Neue · 3 pt rulePro

Wide, navy, condensed caps. A thumbnail that still reads when it is shrunk into a grid.

How to shoot a pair that suits these frames

In orderWritten for platform work
  1. 01Decide the surface first. The wide layouts are for a site, an embed or a video thumbnail, and they will letterbox badly inside a vertical feed.
  2. 02Match the subject to the treatment. Neon wants hard edges and contrast; the luxury frames want an even, composed photograph.
  3. 03Shoot wider than feels necessary for the wide layouts. Cropping in is free, and inventing the edges of a frame is not.
  4. 04Keep the labels short. Serif labels at small sizes and condensed caps at large ones both punish long wording, in opposite ways.
  5. 05Export at the ratio that matches where it lands, remembering the export sheet's ratios are chosen separately from the template's own canvas.
Honest limitsWorth knowing before you commit

What these templates will not do

The wide layouts are the honest catch in this category. The export sheet offers vertical, square, portrait and the original ratio, so a wide canvas arrives at its shape through the original ratio option rather than through a wide preset of its own. Check the first export before you build a set on it. Beyond that, a strong look does not survive a weak pair: a neon frame around two mismatched photographs makes the mismatch look deliberate, which is worse than making it look careless.

Style is the last thing to decide and the first thing people notice, which is a bad combination. Pick the pair, pick the shape, and only then pick the look, or the look will end up choosing the photographs for you.
